About me

I am Dr Óscar Merino, Head of the Department of Angiology and Vascular Surgery at Clínica Rotger in the centre of Palma, where I treat diseases of the veins, arteries and lymphatic system.
I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona and worked as a consultant at Son Dureta and Son Espases hospitals from 2006 to 2022, where I also trained junior doctors. I am the author of a guide to vascular ultrasound diagnosis and have received several awards from the Spanish Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.
I also share information on vascular health on YouTube and Instagram, so that anyone can understand what is happening in their legs and when to see a doctor.
What I treat
Each condition has its own page with a plain-language explanation, the symptoms, the treatments and a video from my channel.
Varicose veins and venous insufficiency
Tired, heavy, swollen legs and visible varicose veins. The most common venous condition.
Spider veins
Telangiectasias and small reticular veins: treatment with micro-injections and laser.
Deep vein thrombosis
A blood clot in the deep veins of the leg. How to recognise it in time and how it is treated.
Peripheral arterial disease
Calf pain when walking (intermittent claudication), cold feet and wounds that do not heal.
Aneurysms
Dilatation of the aorta and other arteries. Diagnosis, follow-up and endovascular repair.
Vascular compression syndromes
May-Thurner, Nutcracker, Wilkie, median arcuate ligament, thoracic outlet and popliteal entrapment: when a compression needs treatment.
Pelvic pain and pelvic congestion
Pelvic varicose veins causing chronic pain, especially in women after pregnancy. In men, varicocele.
Dialysis fistulas
Arteriovenous fistulas and the HeRO graft for patients on haemodialysis.
Malformations and lymphatic disease
Vascular malformations and lymphoedema: coordinated diagnosis and treatment.
Area of special focus
Pelvic congestion and vascular compression syndromes
Little-known conditions that often go undiagnosed for years. I assess them with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), treat them with endovascular techniques and direct the Clínica Rotger workshops in which other specialists are trained in this field.
- Pelvic congestion syndrome and varicocele
- May-Thurner, Nutcracker and Wilkie syndromes
- Median arcuate ligament, thoracic outlet and popliteal entrapment syndromes
- Patients from outside Mallorca: review of your tests in advance and a video consultation

Treatments
Always after a duplex ultrasound assessment, choosing the least invasive option that solves the problem.
Radiofrequency ablation (ClosureFast)
Closes the diseased vein from the inside through a single needle puncture. Quick recovery and little discomfort.
VenaSeal (medical adhesive)
Seals the vein with an adhesive, with no heat, no tumescent anaesthesia and no stockings afterwards.
Sclerotherapy and microfoam
For reticular and spider veins, guided by ultrasound or transillumination. No time off work.
Laser for veins
Nd:YAG laser combined with pulsed light for spider veins and small visible veins.
Varicose vein microsurgery and CHIVA
Minimally invasive day-case surgery with barely visible incisions.
Endovascular and open surgery
Angioplasty, stents, stent grafts and bypass for arteries, aneurysms and compressions.
